16-year-old Sheetal Devi isn’t your average archer. In 2023, she became the first Indian woman to win 2 gold medals in a single edition of the Asian Paralympic Games in Hangzhou. She also emerged as the first armless woman to clinch a Para World Archery Championships medal.
Hailing from the remote mountain district of Kishtwar in Jammu & Kashmir, Sheetal was born without hands in a poor family. She was born with phocomelia, a rare medical condition that causes underdeveloped limbs. Physical challenges did not deter Sheetal from excelling in the field of sports. The story goes that scouts noticed her prowess in archery at a local event organised by the Indian Army in 2021 while she was developing her skills under former archer and coach, Kuldeep Vedwan’s, tutelage.
In 2022, Sheetal Devi participated in the Junior National Championships among abled archers in Goa. While she did not win a medal, her performance and unorthodox technique surprised many. Prior to the Junior Nationals, she had also featured in the Para Archery National Championships.
2023 was a break out year for Sheetal as came up with sublime performances in the Asian Para Games enthralling many along the way. She claimed gold medals in the individual compound and mixed team events and the teenager even won silver in the women’s doubles competition.
A superb run of performances and a remarkable medal-winning show helped Sheetal Devi in being named the Best Youth Athlete of the Year by the Asian Paralympic Committee. And to top it all, earlier this month, Sheetal Devi was awarded the prestigious Arjuna Award for her amazing achievements.
Sheetal Devi’s incredible journey serves as reminder to all of us, children, parents and coaches included, to keep working and believing despite the many seemingly unsurmountable challenges life throws at us.
