The Most Underrated Performance Booster for Kids
All of us want our children to play better, feel more confident and enjoy their sport. We invest time, do a lot of coaching, participate in a bunch of tournaments… but what if the biggest performance booster wasn’t on the field at all? Instead, it was in your children’s bedroom – their sleep!
What the Science Says
Research from institutions like Stanford University and the National Institutes of Health in the US shows that sleep directly impacts:
– reaction time
– decision-making
– focus and attention
– risk of injury
– emotional control
In one well-known Stanford study, athletes who increased their sleep to around 9-10 hours showed faster sprint times, improved accuracy and better overall performance. And perhaps most importantly for young athletes, they felt better while playing.
The Hidden Problem
Most children today are chronically sleep-deprived. Between school, homework, early training sessions and screen time, many kids get far less sleep than they need. Sometimes what looks like a “lack of focus” or “drop in form” is simply a tired brain and body.
Sleep Matters More for Children
Children aren’t just training, they’re growing. During deep sleep:
– The body releases growth hormones
– Muscles repair and strengthen
– The brain processes learning and builds memory
In simple terms, sleep is where improvement actually happens. Training creates the stimulus. Sleep is where the body adapts.
How Parents Can Help
Here are a few small habits that can make a big difference:
– No screens 45-60 minutes before bed
– Consistent sleep and wake times (even on weekends)
– Create a calm bedtime routine (reading, light stretching, conversation)
– Dim lights in the evening to help the body wind down
– Aim for 9–11 hours of sleep for younger children, 8–10 hours for older ones.
These aren’t drastic changes, but over time, they create powerful results. Sometimes, the simplest things can have the biggest impact. Before asking your children to train more, ask if they are getting enough rest. Because champions aren’t just made on the field, they’re also built the night before.
At Bravo, we focus on what truly helps children grow – not just as footballers, but as individuals. Talent matters. Effort matters. Coaching matters. But without proper rest, progress is limited. After all, the goal isn’t just to train harder. It’s to recover well, feel good and enjoy the game more!
