Every once in a while, a story reminds us that success isn’t just about winning. It’s about finding joy in the process. And Alysa Liu’s journey is one such story.

Raised in California by a single father, Alysa was introduced to figure skating at just 5 years old. Very quickly, she showed extraordinary talent, and by the age of 13, she had already become the youngest U.S. national champion in history.

To the world, Alysa was a prodigy. But behind the scenes, her life was anything but ordinary. She trained every day, lived a highly structured life and carried expectations far beyond her years. In Alysa’s own words, skating began to feel less like joy and more like responsibility, or as she called it, “a very abnormal childhood.”

And then, at just 16 years old, after competing at the Beijing Olympics and placing 6th, Alysa made a decision that shocked the sporting world. She walked away. No pressure. No expectations. Just space to breathe, grow and rediscover herself.

Most people assumed her story ended there. But it didn’t. After stepping away from the sport, spending valuable time with friends and family like a normal teenager, Alysa found something far more important than medals. She rediscovered why she had started off with skating in the first place – just love for the sport. When she returned to skating, it was on her terms. Not driven by pressure, but by enjoyment.

And the result? Alysa Liu went on to win the World Championships and return to the Olympic stage, not just as a champion, but as someone who truly enjoyed the journey. She made history in the process becoming the 1st American woman in 24 years to win the Olympic figure skating singles gold medal!

Alysa Liu’s achievements and comeback remind us that talent is important, but finding joy in the process is essential. Medals and trophies mean something only if there is balance to our lives. And sometimes, taking a step back is what can catapult us to the top of the podium.
